GCSE Dance Glossary

(3)
This resource is for teachers of GCSE dance. With the help of the online AQA glossary, I have created a excel document with 3 tabs: Choreography, Performance and Appreciation. I have printed and laminated each tab (A3) to use as posters in my dance studio. My dancers find these posters really helpful to refer to in class.

GCSE Dance Spreadsheet with weightings / formulas to help forecast pupils levels (1-9)

(1)
This resource is for teachers of GCSE dance who want to forecast what levels their dancers will get in their GCSEs based on the 2018 grade boundaries. Either use it to keep an up to date track of pupils scores from their assessments or use it to enter predicted scores, guide conversations with pupils or to answer questions such as ‘how many more marks would I need to get a level…” Cells coloured in a peach colour are cells that contain formulas. I have coloured them to remind me to not touch them. I recommend keeping a copy of the original file just in case something vital to making the spreadsheet run smoothly is accidently deleted.

This is not a PowerPoint that you will be able to use unedited. Feel free to edit for whichever Rock and Roll song you would like to use. Includes: • 6 lesson (60 min per lesson) delivery PowerPoint with: ‘Enquiry questions’, ‘Do Now’ activities, ‘TIF (Take It Further) challenges’, YouTube clips and level descriptors. • STAR marking grid • Mark sheet • Dance feedback toolkit
Stage Types

Stage Types

(1)
This resource is a PowerPoint where on each slide is a stage type: thrust stage, end on stage, in the round and traverse stage. I have printed (A3) and laminated each slide to display in my dance studio. I refer to the stage types at KS3 when asking pupils to sit in the audience, ready for a class performance/assessment. “Year 7, take your places in the audience of a thrust stage.” This is also really useful to use as an aid for class management. At KS4, the display acts as a revision aid.

Updated: 11/08/22 This ‘Gumboot Dance’ 6 lesson SOL is for teachers teaching KS3 dance. This SOL explores the history and evolution of South African Gumboot dance. Pupils will gain and develop basic dance appreciation skills through watching clips of Gumboot dancing and '“Gumboots” Through the eyes of Michael Moloi which will lead into discussions about the history of the style in relation to actions, space, dynamics and relationships. Props are introduced from lesson 4 and inspiration on how to use them is drawn from Stomp the Musical. Pupils will gain and develop basic performance and choreography skills through working as a whole class to perform set Gumboot rhythms using unison, repetition and action and reaction. Working in small groups, pupils are encouraged to be creative and are allocated time to experiment and improvise choreographic ideas with their groups resulting in a group performance of their Gumboot choreographies that include a prop. Pupils will have the opportunity to view each other’s work and provide feedback to improve their own and other’s work. This SOL also provides pupils with research homework tasks to promote independence and research skills needed at KS4. KS4 AQA GCSE Dance Revision – Component 2: 12 mark questions This resource has been designed for teachers of GCSE dance revising the dance anthology in preparation for the written exam. This lesson has been created to provide a way for dance students to revise in a fun and interactive way. There are many ways to use this resource: Make it into a game: print out the 1st slide and cut the boxes out. Pupils can pick the boxes at random and have a go at answering the questions on the second slide. Differentiation: You can pre pick the questions prior to the lesson based on your pupil’s strengths and areas of weakness to challenge your pupils appropriately. Print out the 2nd slide for them with their differentiated question on. Whole class activity: As a class decide on a question to tackle and discuss the question together before allowing the pupils to have a go at writing their answers. KS4 GCSE Dance Revision – Component 2: Choreographic Devices and Intent within the Anthology

(0)
This resource has been designed for teachers of GCSE dance revising choreographic devices and choreographic intent within the anthology, in preparation for the written exam. This lesson has been created to provide a way for dance students to revise in a fun and interactive way. Prior to the lesson, decide how you are going to divide your class into 6 groups (ideally a mixture of high and low ability in each group). After the starter activity on the PowerPoint sit pupils in their groups and give them access to one of the GCSE dance anthology dances each, either on their phones or iPads. Links to GCSE dance anthology dances can be found on EAQA but you will need a log in to access them. While watching their given dance piece, pupils should write notes about the choreographic devices that they see. Discuss with each group how the choreographic devices relates to the choreographic intent of the piece. After the discussion, give each group their exam question handout and allow pupils to answer the 2 questions (using their notes to help them).

Y6 Open Evening Harry Potter/Fantastic Beasts Theme - Dance Idea

(0)
We have our Year 6 open evening coming up and the whole school theme is ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’. The creative Arts department has decided to split up into the different Harry Potter houses to provide an interactive experience for the y6 pupils to get involved in. For dance I chose Ravenclaw House (As Ravenclaw is the best!) and in the dance studio a charms class will be taking place. A selection of Y10 and Y12 pupils will be working in pairs. One pupil having the wand and the other being controlled by the wand as if under a spell. As the wand moves around, the pupil ‘under the spell’ will move around mimicking the actions, dynamic and space that relates to the wands movements. After the Y6s have watched a demonstration, they will be able to take part either as the person controlling the wand or the one ‘under the spell’. The aim of the Charms lesson will be for pupils to learn how to control the movements of others with their wands. If they can learn to control the movements of others, they will be able to control the movements of fantastic beasts. In the background, a mixture of music featured in the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films will be played and a mixture of blue and silver gel lights will be lit in the dance studio (for Ravenclaw) to create a magical ambiance. The Art department kindly made me 6 wands that I could use. In this resource there is a PowerPoint slide that you can project throughout the lesson. Feel free try this yourself, and let me know how it goes for you in the reviews. :)

GCSE Dance Anthology Megamix

This resource is a music file that I created using audio clips from the 6 professional works from the dance anthology. The clips have been mixed together to create an anthology megamix. I have used the megamix within 2 of my uploaded resources (KS4 GCSE Dance Infra and Y9 GCSE Dance Taster Anthology). It can be used within lessons and/or used as the music for a performance piece. Enjoy!

Encourage pupils to physically try out questions such as ‘describe one exercise a dancer can do to improve flexibility’ before putting it into words. KS4 AQA GCSE Dance Revision – Component 2: Section C

KS4 AQA GCSE Dance Revision – Component 2: Section C This resource has been designed for teachers of GCSE dance revising the dance anthology in preparation for the written exam. This lesson has been created to provide a way for dance students to revise in a fun and interactive way. Prior to the lesson, decide how you are going to divide your class into 6 groups (ideally a mixture of high and low ability in each group). Each group should be given a large piece of paper with one of the 6 dance anthology pieces written in the middle, then use the PowerPoint. I spent approximately 5 min per slide and got the pupils to rotate around the room rather than the paper. You will need the six anthology fact files found on the AQA GCSE Dance website for the latter part of the lesson. Once the lesson is complete you will have revision display posters created by the dance pupils themselves.

Y9 GCSE Dance Taster: Choreography 12 lesson delivery PowerPoint and Resources

(0)
This year 9 GCSE Dance Taster: Choreography 12 lesson delivery PowerPoint has been created for teachers of Dance preparing their Year 9 pupils for GCSE. During lessons 1-6, pupils will explore a variety of different stimuli used in choreography e.g. 2D art and text. Pupils will learn how to create and develop motifs based on a stimulus, structure their choreographies and experimenting with choreographic devices. During lessons 7-12, pupils will choose from a list of stimuli (based on the actual GCSE component 1 exam paper), take part in research tasks and choreograph their own group choreography. At the end of the SOW, pupils will be assessed using the GCSE choreography mark sheet. Each lesson comes with starters (bell activities) and lesson objectives. The SOW also includes: Homework 1 – Choreography exam style questions (based on section A of the written dance exam paper) Homework 2 – Programme note with examples. Choreography help sheet (I advise printing this out back to back and laminating for each group) Research task (theory lesson). Please note, the video included in the PowerPoint is from Eaqa. You can use your own example video if you prefer.
